Top 10 Avoidable Moving Mistakes | Movers | Spanish fort AL

Moving takes time and energy. At Pedro’s Moving & Storage, we are big on hassle-free moving. Moving can seem overwhelming, but with the proper preparation you can avoid a lot of unnecessary stress. Here are some of the most common mistakes people make when they move. Check out our tips on how you can easily steer clear of some moving disasters

Not Researching Companies

Begin researching companies 2-3 months prior to your move out date. Make sure your movers carry a moving license. Check out their record with the Better Business Bureau, and ask for references. Don’t forget to ask for an in-home estimate. It’s important to plan out your budget ahead of time.

Not Planning Packing

Packing isn’t as easy as it looks. There’s a significant amount of planning that goes into packing. We recommend taking inventory before and after packing. Start packing 8 weeks before the move date. Gather the right size boxes and packing materials. Sort through your items, and toss out anything you don’t need. Get a head start by packing the things you scarcely use first.

Not Labeling & Sorting Boxes

Label your boxes – write down the contents of the box, and include handling instructions for fragile or heavy objects. This will help your movers load the boxes accordingly, and it will also be beneficial for you when you have to unpack.

Leaving Your Valuables With The Movers

As great as your movers are, the best way to ensure your valuables make it to your new home safely is to pack them with you. Safely wrap and pack your jewelry, heirlooms, professional camera, important documents and any prized collections with you in your carry-on or car.

Packing Flammables & Other Non-Movables

Communicate with your moving company in advance to check if your movers can transport any flammable items or explosive items, such as firearms, your barbeque grill or your alcohol. We don’t want to put anyone in danger during your move, and we also want to risk damaging any of your items.

Lifting And Carrying Everything

Don’t attempt to lift and carry everything into the truck. Save your back, and use dollies, carts and other moving equipment to lessen the burden.

Forgetting Rover Needs To Move Too!

Don’t forget about your pets! They need to prepare to move to. If you are flying to your new home, check with your vet and your airline for proper flying procedures. Make sure your pet has all its immunizations up to date, its insurance, and all of its identification tags.

Not Preparing A “Survival Kit”

Pack a small bag with the items you will need immediately during the first week at your new home. We recommend including enough clothes to wear for a week, snacks and non-perishable foods, a first aid kit, your cell phone charger, and light tools for opening your boxes.

Forgetting To Change Your Address

Contact your postal office to set up mail forwarding to your new address. Don’t forget to change your mailing address with your banks, health insurance and car insurance.

Not Checking Your Insurance

Knowledge is power! Have a good understanding of what your insurance entails. Know how much it covers in damages and what exactly it covers.
